When we got here two weeks ago, there was a nice dusting of a couple of inches of snow making the city beautiful, even though the trees are leafless. Now, the snow has melted, and the socialist-era apartment buildlings are looking particularly drab in the cold gray days. And hidden before under the snow, and constantly being added to by the surprising number of urban dog-owners, is an amazing amount of dog poop. Big piles, small piles, new piles, old piles. No wonder “hausschuhes” are compulsory in all the schools and most private homes. I brought slippers with me, but dog crap was not on my mind at the time.
